Vince Winegardner, a local political activist who ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2011, has signed up to run this time around for the Davidson Town Board.
The 58-year-old River Run resident announced his candidacy in an email to friends and supporters Wednesday headlined “New faces needed on Davidson Town Board.” He signaled in the email that he’ll oppose high-occupancy toll lanes on I-77 and continue his longtime opposition to the town’s ownership of the local cable system.
Winegardner has been involved in a variety of activities in Davidson and the Lake Norman area. He formerly served on the Davidson Planning Board and is a former president of the River Run Property Owners Association.
He is president of the Northcross Master Association in Huntersville, which represents property owners in the area around I-77 Exit 25. He owns a medical practice and related medical services business along with his wife, Dr. Linda Winegardner. They have three grown children.
Winegardner has a campaign website at www.voteforvince.org
Winegardner becomes the eighth candidate for one of the five Davidson Town Board seats. Four incumbents are in the race – Jim Fuller, Rodney Graham, Brian Jenest, and Connie Wessner. And Winegardner makes it four challengers, along with Beth Cashion, Stacey Anderson, and Rick Short, who also have filed.
Election filing ends this Friday, July 19, at noon. See the full list of candidates who have filed for local races at the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections website, MeckBOE.org
WINEGARDNER’S STATEMENT
Subject: New Faces Needed on Davidson Town Board
Friends and Neighbors,
Well it is election time again and as you may know, I have been very vocal in my opposition to the I-77 tolling issue and disappointed in how our Davidson Town Board has managed that and a few other lesser matters. Having said that, I agree with 80% of what our current town board does in leading the town. This infers that I disagree with 20% of what the town board does. That is no big deal unless the 20% that I believe they are doing wrong will affect the 80% they are doing right. That is why I am running for the Davidson Town Board.
Our Town’s leadership has allowed extremely expensive I-77 tolling to be our preferred price for building a commuter rail. The price being imposed on us is unfair and far too high. Citizens need to learn how these issues relate and make a decision this Fall on who will represent them and our future. I go into great detail on my campaign web site (www.voteforvince.org) on why I think the I-77 toll issue falls into the 20% category and how it will adversely affect Davidson.
A town the size of Davidson should not have to deal with the burden of subsidizing a cable company, being triple taxed to drive to work, or subsidize commuters at a price of over $46 per round trip. These three needlessly expensive decisions supported by the current Davidson Board weigh heavy on Davidson and future generations living in our community.
I look forward to listening to your thoughts on what you think is important and how our town should address these and other matters.
Respectfully,
Vince Winegardner
